In a thrilling start to their 2025 international campaign, the USA Women’s Eagles faced a narrow 39–33 defeat against Japan at Los Angeles’ Wallis Annenberg Stadium on April 26. The Eagles began strongly, establishing a 21–7 lead with tries from Alev Kelter, debutant Erica Coulibaly, and Bulou Mataitoga. Vice Captain McKenzie Hawkins contributed with successful conversions, but Japan closed the gap to 21–19 by halftime, capitalizing on a USA yellow card and penalties.
The second half saw both teams exchanging scores, with Emily Henrich and Keia Mae Sagapolu adding tries for the USA. However, Japan’s relentless pressure and strategic play, including a decisive try by debutant Nana Tarekado, shifted the momentum. Despite Hawkins’ four conversions, the Eagles couldn’t regain the lead, concluding the match at 33–39.
Post-match, Head Coach Sione Fukofuka acknowledged the team’s challenges in transitioning out of their own half and the impact of penalties. Captain Kate Zackary emphasized the need for improved decision-making under pressure and adherence to team standards.
Notably, the match marked significant milestones: Coulibaly and Kapoina Bailey earned their first international caps, with Coulibaly scoring her inaugural try. Additionally, prop Hope Rogers tied the record for most test caps by a Women’s Eagle, setting the stage for a potential record-breaking appearance in the upcoming Pacific Four Series opener against Canada on May 2.
