In a high-stakes clash at the Big 12 Women’s Lacrosse Championship on May 3, the Florida Gators delivered a commanding performance to defeat Arizona State, securing the conference title with a 15–7 victory.
From the opening whistle, Florida asserted control with their aggressive midfield play and fast-paced transitions. Senior attacker Emma LoPinto led the charge with four goals and two assists, earning tournament MVP honors for her relentless offensive efforts and field vision.
Arizona State showed promise in the early minutes, tying the game 3–3 midway through the first quarter. However, Florida’s defense quickly tightened, and the Gators went on a 6–0 run that left the Sun Devils scrambling to regain momentum. Florida’s draw control dominance—winning 17 of 24—gave them a significant edge in possession.
“Our goal was to dictate the tempo and stay composed under pressure,” said Florida head coach Amanda O’Leary. “I’m proud of how our team executed. Every player stepped up today.”
Goalkeeper Sarah Reznick was another standout, notching 11 saves and shutting down key ASU opportunities. Her poise in net anchored a Florida defense that allowed just one goal in the entire third quarter.
Despite a late push by Arizona State, including two quick goals from sophomore midfielder Kayla Montgomery, the Gators maintained their composure and responded with a trio of goals that sealed the win. The depth of Florida’s bench was evident as eight different players recorded goals.
This victory marks Florida’s fourth Big 12 title in the past five seasons and strengthens their resume heading into the NCAA Tournament.
Arizona State, despite the loss, has made significant strides this season and is expected to receive an at-large bid based on their strong regular season record and RPI ranking.
“We’ve grown so much as a unit,” said ASU head coach Taryn VanThof. “This isn’t the end—it’s a setup for what’s next.”
With momentum on their side and a trophy in hand, Florida now turns their attention to the national stage, where they’ll be a formidable contender.
