San Diego Wave FC returned to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night and treated their home fans to a thrilling performance against a formidable Kansas City Current squad. With both teams entering the match unbeaten, the clash promised fireworks—and delivered.
The visitors struck first in the 19th minute, with Kansas City’s forward Temwa Chawinga slicing through San Diego’s defense to bury a low-driven shot past goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. The early goal quieted the home crowd and put the Wave on their heels for much of the first half.
San Diego struggled to establish rhythm as Kansas City’s high press disrupted their passing lanes. Midfielder Danielle Colaprico played a key role in keeping possession under pressure, but chances were limited heading into halftime with the Wave trailing 1–0.
The second half saw a noticeable shift in intensity. Head coach Casey Stoney made tactical adjustments, including bringing on forward Jaedyn Shaw, whose energy immediately changed the tempo. In the 62nd minute, Shaw found Alex Morgan with a perfectly weighted through ball, and Morgan calmly finished to level the score.
The equalizer reignited the Wave’s momentum, and they continued to press forward. Kansas City’s defense began to tire, and Wave midfielder Emily van Egmond nearly gave San Diego the lead with a long-range effort that struck the post in the 74th minute.
The decisive moment came in the 87th minute when Sofia Jakobsson whipped in a cross that deflected off a Kansas City defender and into the path of Morgan, who scored her second goal of the night to complete the comeback and seal the 2–1 win.
The result keeps San Diego Wave FC undefeated through three matches and cements their place near the top of the NWSL standings. With their chemistry building and stars stepping up in key moments, the Wave look poised for a strong campaign ahead.
